William Gannon and Orion Kim were each named State Alternates in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist Competition. Will received this recognition in the “Senior Performance” category (age 15-18), and Orion
received this recognition in the “Junior Performance” category (age 11-14). This is one of the most demanding national competitions in the country and Minnesota is generally regarded as one of the top four regions in the nation for pre-college piano. It begins at the state level, proceeds to a regional division, and then to the national finals. This year, the finals were to be in Atlanta, but because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, all levels of the competition have moved to a video only format.
Both young men offered very difficult, complex, and brilliant programs. William presented the first movement of Beethoven’s Sonata in A Major, Opus 2, No. 2; three Chopin Preludes; Ravel’s Jeux d’Eau; and the stupendous Tarantella of Franz Liszt. Orion offered Beethoven’s 32 Variations in C minor, Wo 80; the Fireworks of Debussy; and the thrilling Heroic Polonaise of Chopin.
Let’s take hats off to Will and Orion for representing our studio at such a high level!
Keep the dream alive.
Yours in Music –
Joe & Jo Anne
